Louisiana Federal Judge Impeached

Federal Judge G. Thomas Porteous of Louisiana was found guilty by the U.S. Senate on four articles of impeachment. His conviction means that the judge will be removed from the federal bench, and makes the 63-year-old Porteous only the eighth federal judge in American history to be convicted and impeached.

The judge is also “forever disqualified to hold and enjoy any office of honor, trust or profit under the United States,” Senator Daniel Inouye said during the Senate hearing.

The House of Representatives Judiciary Committee Task Force on Judicial Impeachment had found that Porteous was engaged in corrupt conduct over a number of years.
