Party Switch for Charlie Crist

Charlie Crist

Ever since he lost the Republican Senate Primary in 2010 to Marco Rubio, Charles Crist has been taking baby steps towards the transition to the Democratic Party, finally taking the plunge completely last Friday at a White House holiday reception.

After formally joining the Dems by signing the papers to become a registered Democrat, the former Governor of Florida tweeted his reaction:

Proud and honored to join the Democratic Party in the home of President @BarackObama!

Crist also spoke with the Tampa Bay times about his new affiliation:

“I’ve had friends for years tell me, ‘You know Charlie, you’re a Democrat and you don’t know it.'”

President Obama was so happy to hear about Crist’s change of heart and mind that he greeted the news with a fist-bump.

Since his loss to Rubio Crist has had no official party affiliation, and last October he backed Obama for President. Last fall he also gave a speech at Obama’s nominating convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

There are rumors that Crist wants to take on Florida’s Republican Governor Rick Scott in the 2014 election. He will however need to fight off Democratic Party challengers who will not be impressed by Crist’s background as a Republican.
