Events around the U.S. today will commemorate the 69th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor, on December 7th, 1941, in which a surprise Japanese air attack on the U.S. Pacific Fleet at anchor, sank or disabled eight battleships and killed more than 2,400 sailors. The event served as the catalyst for America’s entry into World War II.The National World War II Museum in New Orleans will host a special program and memorial ceremony on Tuesday morning. A commemoration ceremony will also take place at the Battleship North Carolina, where ham radio operators will also transmit signals to other ships all morning, using the same equipment as that on the bombed battleships. In Hawaii, the Royal Hawaiian Mint will usher in the seventieth “Year of Remembrance” with the issuing today of the Pearl Harbor Silver Commemorative.Numerous events will also take place in honor of Pearl Harbor Day 2010 at the Pacific National Monument Visitor Center in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
