In the wake of disclosures by Edward Snowden about infringement of privacy by government on private citizens, President Obama called for National Security Agency reform in a speech he gave in January. The result of that call to action is a big data review due to be released soon, most likely next week.
A large component of that review reveals that private-sector information which had been and is being collected on millions of American citizens could easily be used to discriminate against certain consumers who are more vulnerable.
John Podesta, White House counselor, said the review discusses housing and employment as just two of many possible issues that could be easily targeted as places in which discrimination could occur. Podesta said that the review should be considered a road map for policymakers to use to guide them when making policy decisions in the coming years.
“With the rapidity of the way technology changes, it’s going to be hard to imagine what it’s going to look like a generation from now,” Podesta explained. “But at least we can look out over the horizon and say, `Here are the trends. What do we anticipate the likely policy issues that it raises?’”
