Some politicians just have a kind of a knack for fund raising. Take Barack Obama for instance, who just has to dance onto the stage at The Amsterdam Theater with bevy of beautiful people such as Sarah Jessica Parker and thousand dollar bills are thrown at him, no problema.
And then there are the Nancy Pelosis of the world, who have a similar affect as your next door neighbor insurance salesman who wants to meet with you after dinner to talk about your coverage. Yup, just shoot me in the head.
So Nancy has this plan to take back the House of Representatives. It is a good plan that every self-respecting House minority leader should profess. But no fancy banquets, entertainment oriented evenings, or even private dinner parties for her targets. Nancy’s style is a bit more direct, less wasteful of resources, but probably not as effective, either.
Determining that the rank-and-file have simply not been pulling their weight in raising enough cash to bring the Democrats back into control of the House, she gathered a group of hand-selected slackers who have not lived up to their pledges, and twisted a few proverbial arms.
Pelosi, the former speaker, handed the lucky leaders, including Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Jim Clyburn (D-SC) and Xavier Becerra (D-Calif.) three pre-printed cards with the following messages, a different message on each card:
• Yes, I will contribute ___________ by June 30th.
• No, I will not give in June, but I pledge to give ______________ by ______________.
• No, I am not on the team.
Makes you just want to be a Democratic leader, doesn’t it?
