Dennis Kucinich, liberal Democratic Representative from Ohio, believes that President Obama should be impeached for authorizing air strikes against Libya.“President Obama moved forward without Congress approving. He didn’t have congressional authorization, he has gone against the Constitution, and that’s got to be said.”
Democrats Unhappy with Obama Decision
Kucinich is not alone in his criticism of Obama and his administration. The congressional dissenters believe that Obama and his staff should have been more proactive in convincing Congress as well as the American people that US intervention in Libya was the best option at this time.Kucinich explained further that at least “It would appear on its face to be an impeachable offense,” to authorize the air strikes without congressional approval, but he also is far from certain that Congress would decide to move ahead to a trial.
Kucinich Called for Bush Impeachment, Too
The desire to impeach presidents is nothing new for Kucinich who also called for the impeachment of past President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney for their roles in taking the US into the Iraq war as well as for their decisions regarding the conduct of that war. Unfortunately for Kucinich his desire was thwarted by the Democratic leadership.Kucinich hinted that perhaps an actual impeachment process would be beyond what is really needed, but at least people should know what the Constitution demands.
“Now, it doesn’t necessarily follow that simply because a president has committed an impeachable offense, that the process should start to impeach and remove him,” he said. “That’s a whole separate question. But we have to clearly understand what this Constitution is about.”
