Gingrich Defends Statements on Palestinians

Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich called Palestinians an “invented people” during a televised interview he gave over the weekend and Saturday’s Republican leadership candidate’s debate.

The former House of Representatives Speaker also said that the Palestinians are composed of leaders who are “terrorists,” and that they are just a creation of anti-Israel propaganda.

Gingrich came under heavy criticism for these statements, and not just from the Palestinian leadership, but also from fellow Republican candidate Mitt Romney, who said that Gingrich’s remarks were a mistake which will make it even more difficult for the Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate a peace proposal.

Nevertheless Gingrich defended his remarks as being “historically accurate.” As an historian he believes it is time that at least one of the candidates stand up and state the truth about Palestinians, Gingrich said
