Despite recent signs that the former Trump campaign manager might run for the senate seat in New Hampshire, Corey Lewandowski announced officially he will not seek office.
He had been thinking about running against the incumbent Democrat Jeanne Shaheen, who is going for a third term this coming November. Lewandowski has been looking like a possible candidate since last August when he promoted a possible campaign website in the midst of his televised and defiantly aggressive testimony in front of the House Judiciary Committee in September. He continued to contemplate joining the race for several months after.
Lewandowski announced his withdrawal from the race in a tweet:
“After much consideration I have decided to forgo a campaign for the US Senate. While taking on a career politician from the Washington swamp is a tall order, I am certain I would have won. My priorities remain my family and ensuring that @realDonaldTrump is re-elected POTUS.”
Republicans see New Hampshire as an important bulwark for them, along with several other key Senate seats in their effort to defend their 53-47 majority in the Senate. They see themselves having to fight for at least six battleground states, and they believe New Hampshire will be a more challenging campaign than in some of the other, easier states such as Alabama and Michigan.
Shaheen, the incumbent, has won five statewide races, including three terms as governor and two terms in the Senate, winning in 2008 and again in 2014. (Senators serve 6-year terms.)
Lewandowski did not leave the Republicans high and dry. There are other potential candidates to challenge Sheehan: retired Army General Donald Bolduc; lawyer Bryant “Corky” Messner; and former state House Speaker Bill O’Brien.
