A Washington Post—ABC News poll taken last week revealed that presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump with a tiny lead over probably Democratic candidate for president, Hillary Clinton. Trump took the front in the race with 46 percent of registered voters saying they would vote for him; with only 44 percent voting for Clinton.
That 2 percent difference is well within the poll’s 3.5 percent margin of error. The
poll reveals that voters are trending towards support of Trump, reversing what had been a huge lead by the Democratic contender in March. That poll showed Clinton leading with 50 percent of the vote to Trump’s 41 percent.
The new poll also asked what would happen if a third party candidate entered the race. Given the choice between Mitt Romney, the Republican nominee in 2012, and Clinton and Trump, voters went with Clinton by 37 percent, Trump 35 percent and Romney 22 percent.
A major problem in this election is the high disapproval rating of both candidates. Both Trump and Clinton were viewed unfavorably by 57 percent of the voters who were surveyed. It can be surmised that many voters are therefore voting against the candidate they dislike more, rather than voting for the candidate they like better.
The poll queried 829 registered voters between May 16-19, 2016.
